I checked all of my books and couldn't find the snail in any of them. I did find online that snails were associated with laziness or sloth, which goes along with your idea of spiritual warfare. I like that idea because it works well in both of the pictures you posted. The first, that he's waging battle against sloth and in the bottom, that he's praying for help to overcome it.Kelly Bondnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5144372.post-60932653588629467832023-05-20T20:23:24.052-05:002023-05-20T20:23:24.052-05:00Thanks! I've read the chapter on Sidney and Spenser in Lewis's Oxford History, plus he has very helpful chapters on Spenser in his Studies in Medieval and Renaissance Literature and The Allegory of Love. I wish I had known about The Faerie Queene when I was teaching my children. But if I had been reading blogs like yours I don't know how I could have accomplished all those years of homeschooling...

Recently, through rereadings of The Ransom Trilogy, I have become interested in Lewis's great work on medieval literature, so the idea of reading Spenser has come to me from other places than your blog. But here I find all the encouragement I need, so practical and hopeful, to at least read it myself. Thank you, thank you, for all the joy you radiate, that urges me on.GretchenJoannahttp://gretchenjoanna.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5144372.post-2038574058049453222023-02-23T18:39:38.895-06:002023-02-23T18:39:38.895-06:00I've heard good things about that edition too....I've heard good things about that edition too. But I don't imagine that he had to put much effort into choosing the right time for this play's setting. I only know about the "personalities" of the different hours from a prayer book I used during Lent a few years ago, but I imagine that knowledge would have been much more natural to Shakespeare, more a part of his . . . well, maybe not everyday experience, but surely something he was more accustomed to than we are, since the Church in his day was more woven into daily life than it is in ours.

So I'm thinking it was intentional (he could have led into Ariel's backstory by any number of routes -- it didn't have to be this one), but that choice of hour would have been easy and natural, intuitive, as you say, given the nature of the story.Kellyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16618197716777772631noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5144372.post-59720357375533267732021-03-18T22:53:04.100-05:002021-03-18T22:53:04.100-05:00How interesting! One wonders if something like this was intentional on Shakespeare's part, or if thinking about time in this way was such an ingrained thing that it came out in his play without much conscious thought. I am always curious if the subtle threads that show up in an author's work are there intentionally or if they are woven in by intuition rather than intention.esther janehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14685986459502023888noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5144372.post-28947544293261378412021-02-21T18:07:41.365-06:002021-02-21T18:07:41.365-06:00I think there must be -- or at least that Lewis is...I think there must be -- or at least that Lewis is imitating Greene, because I know he loved The Wind in the Willows. Mr. Badger seems a bit more rough than Trufflehunter to me at first, but only at first.
